About Starts with Soil

Starts with Soil is a new initiative from Equation Coffee that provides $0.03/lb back to farmers in the form of agricultural support by focusing on:

  • Crop diversification based on agroforestry designs
  • Decreasing dependency on external inputs, such as chemical fertilizers
  • Improving organic matter
  • Increasing net income

We The Origin is excited to be the first importer in Canada to support the Starts with Soil program. We hope these regenerative agricultural practices will help farmers in Tolima, Colombia to develop more sustainable coffee production.

About Washed EA Decaf Process

This coffee was decaffeinated by Descafecol where coffee is naturally decaffeinated at origin, the only such operation in Colombia.

The natural decaffeination process combines high mountain spring water and Ethyl Acetate (EA) of natural origin. EA is present in every coffee cherry in its natural state (as well as in many fruits and vegetables). Therefore, there are no synthetic chemical substances added.

The natural EA is obtained from a sugar cane-based process and is, together with spring water, the only other element coffee gets in contact with.

This water-EA process allows for gentle extraction of the caffeine from the bean, avoiding excessive heat or pressure, maintaining the natural structure and all characteristics of the coffee bean.

For more information about the decaffeination process, please visit Descafecol's website.
